On Monday 5 July (first day of the holidays) The University of Auckland Science Faculty will hold its annual Incredible Science open day. It will be "full of fun, with interactive activities, lectures, shows and displays". It is free and aimed at intermediate and primary children and their families as well as educators.
Mt Roskill Intermediate School will narrow down the board game entries to three after judging all entries and will then submit these in the Science Board Game Competition. This competition will involve students designing and creating a board game based on scientific topics and themes. These entries will be worked on during term time and then displayed and judged on 5th July as part of the programme.

Annual Planting

|
The annual planting of the stream by the school took place on Friday 26 June as part of the on-going revegetation of the Upper Oakley Stream. Its intent is to improve the ecology of the stream margins in order to promote an increase of native wild-life which is at present negligible.
Our year 7 enhancement groups have been propagating native plants. These were part of the stock of plants that were planted.

Speeches 2010

Marcelle Bernard Photos

In week 3 of Term Two, the Year 8's were very fortunate to have Marcelle Bernard, an international speaker, come to speak to the students about the techniques needed to present an interesting speech.
She has been coming to the school for the last four years and has been an inspiration to the children in helping them to prepare for their speeches.
Semi finals and finals for speeches will be at the beginning of term 3.

MOTAT 2010

MOTAT Trip Photos

How have inventions shaped our world? This is the big question Y7 students have been investigating during term 2. We were fortunate enough to take part in an exciting education outside of the classroom experience at the Museum of Transport and Technology. It was fascinating for our students to see how areas of invention have changed over time. All students attended a workshop where they had the opportunity to pump water from a well, write with a quill pen and have a go at placing some old inventions with their modern counterpart.
The inventions trail was also a great experience, where students were given clues to help guide them through the wonderful artifcats and different areas of MOTAT. The tactile dome always proves to be a popular experience on the day, and this year was no exception. Rumour has it a few teachers even had a turn at navigating their way through the haunted house this year!
The experience at MOTAT aims to help students see how inventions have changed over time, and what impact this has on our daily lives, and our world. It was a great success, and it has been exciting building on this learning back at school. We would like to acknowledge the wonderful parent helpers and very supportive teacher aides that came to assist us on the day. We would not be able to go on trips like this without their help. We would also like to thank MOTAT for providing us with this experience at no cost to our students. We were very fortunate to be offered this opportunity this year.

DARE 2010

|
The DARE programme, which is currently been taken by Constable Doug Jamieson and the classroom teachers, is designed to help students at Intermediate school to make safe choices about drug use. It is also teaching them how to identify positive things about themselves and build positive relationships to support these. These sessions are extremely successful and are found to be worthwhile by all involved.
On Friday 18th June, all the year 8 students went to Paradise Ice Skating in Avondale, for their D.A.R.E DAY OUT! Since we are such a big group, the year 8 classes were split into two groups - one for the morning session, and one for the afternoon. This is a wonderful opportunity for some students to get on the ice for the very first time, with the help of the Police, who sponsor the trip as a reward for participating in the programme.
All the students had a wonderful time on the ice, and thankfully, there were NO injuries... well, only a few blisters on Mr Hood's fingers from doing up so many laces!
Thanks to Mr Doug Jamieson for coming into school and teaching our Year 8's about making responsible decisions regarding drugs and alcohol. It is an invaluable unit, and we have been very lucky to have someone with such expertise guiding our students down the right path for future decision making.

Customs Visit 2010

Custom dog visit Photos

On Friday 4th June, Daniel and Anzac (The dog!), along with two other customs officers, came to school to talk to the Year 8 students as part of the D.A.R.E programme studied in term 2. The students learnt about the many ways in which drugs are smuggled into New Zealand and the consequences of attempting to do so. Daniel explained that people go to all sorts of measures to get drugs from one place to another, whether it be via mail, strapped to their body, in (what looks to be) lollies, and even sewed into the lining of their pants! It was great for the students to hear that even attempting to do this sort of thing, if you are caught, can mean going into a juvenille detention centre (yes one actually exists in New Zealand), and being prevented from travelling to certain parts of the world like America and Europe - where many of the most amazing sights in the world are.
Anzac was also on form this year, as he managed to smell out the "drugs" on some unsuspecting teachers (whom shall remain nameless). No further action has been taken against the teachers as it was later revealed that the drugs in fact were planted by the customs officers themselves to show the students how accurate Anzac's nose was!
This year's visit from Customs was FANTASTIC, and the students learnt so much about what the role of customs is in our airports specifically. Thanks to Daniel and Anzac for their time, and we look forward to seeing you again next year.
