Congratulations!
Congratulations go to Hugh Huang who won a prestigious Gold Award at the NIWA Science and Technology Fair recently. Hugh’s Gold Award was one of only three awarded at the Fair which covers Secondary School contestants as well as Intermediate students. It came in the Atmospheric and Water Research category, Hugh researched the aerodynamics of cars and the judges were extremely impressed by the quality and the originality of Hugh’s thinking.
Dweep Kapadia came second in the Year 7 and 8 Physical World category for his work on magnetism and the effect of temperature on certain magnetic materials.
Congratulations also go to Jiraj Modak, Balu Mallela and Ritika Fernandes, who all won highly commended prizes. This is a wonderful result for our school and out thanks must go to our hard working science teacher Sean Carroll who continues to inspire our students here at Mt Roskill Intermediate.
It is also interesting to note that many of our former students also won prizes in the Year 9 and 10 categories at the same competition.
Munakata Visit
Last week we hosted our annual exchange with Munakata City in Japan. This exchange has been going on for close to 12 years now and is a wonderful opportunity for our students. This year we had 15 students and 4 staff visit all of whom were hosted by students and staff at MRI. As usual, it was a very rewarding 5 days for everyone involved.
We send 17 students and 3 staff in about 2 weeks time to Japan.
Campus Music
Recently we held our 2nd Campus Music Festival. Each of the three Campus schools had about 30 minutes to showcase the music at their schools and then there was a shared item with all of the students at the end.
The talent on show was inspiring and made me very proud to be part of this Campus.
It was wonderful for our students to see what was possible for themselves as musicians as they move onto the Grammar School. The variety of opportunities and the levels they achieve are remarkable.
School Production
Our school production this year is “Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat”. Our cast of students have been working extremely hard over the last few weeks and the show is beginning to look really good.
I would encourage you to keep the 7th or 8th of September free so that you can come along to one of our shows.

Principal

Ski Trip - Queenstown 2010

Sixteen excited students boarded a flight to Christchurch. Two hours of unbelievable views, five ipods and sarcastic comments. Eventually we arrived at our destination - Christchurch. The Ski Trip experience had just begun.
As we finally decided on seating we departed across the road to the Antarctic Centre where we encountered a fake blizzard, a day in Antarctica, lively penguins and expensive food. Also Chubby Arbuckle (our teddy mascot) was born.
After a three hour bus drive we arrived at Lake Tekapo, a mass of beautiful water and a breathtaking view of mountains in the distance. Four hours later we arrived at Coronet Peak Hotel where we we’re to stay for the next week.
Following our delicious breakfast the next morning we boarded the bus again, heading for the Cardrona ski field. Hastily grabbing our skis and boots we set off to our instructors. A heap of tumbles, falls, slips and slides later everyone went to the top where everyone encountered crazy snowboarders and the action of turning.
Skiing was a blast, the wind in our face, snow flying behind you as we raced down the slope, narrowly missing snowboarders and almost tackling... certain people. The same thing each following day except Wednesday where we went to The Remarkables. The weather was terrible, snow everywhere and lots of falls. This was horrible but fun at the same time.
The last day was the best. We visited the history that is Arrowtown. Interesting sights at the museum including old bakeries, schools even a drunk guy passed out at a bar. (fake)
Gold panning was next. It was amazing. As we waited impatiently for big nuggets of gold we were unpleasantly surprised that the biggest piece we could find was the size of a crumb. However we didn’t mind because the second best thing was just to arrive. Bungy Jumping. Mr Davies was expected to jump but instead our awesome bus driver Matt jumped in his place. He even did a water touch. Following that was the gondola and luge. An amazing view of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown city as we were suspended in the air. At the top we enjoyed luge riding. So cool. Five rides later we reluctantly left and headed for Queenstown airport. Sadly we waved good bye as we boarded our flight. Two hours of unbelievable views, five ipods and sarcastic comments we touched down in Auckland. We wanted to go back so badly we all had the idea to hide in the plane but unfortunately we were snapped. There were tumbles, falls, laughter, sarcasm, tears and a heap of snow.
That wraps up the 2010 Mt Roskill Intermediate Ski Trip.
